Showers expected Wednesday

Rain showers are expected Wednesday, but not enough to reverse the dry conditions plaguing Northern California.

Clouds and cooler weather from a Gulf of Alaska front will start dropping into the Sierra foothills today. That front will bring a slight chance of rain to western Nevada County tonight, with rain likely on Wednesday and Wednesday night.

Grass Valley has had almost 31 inches of rain in the current precipitation year, compared to 48 inches that normally falls by this time. This precipitation year runs from July 1, 2006, to June 30, 2007.

The average rainfall for Grass Valley is 53.5 inches. By this time last year, when the area was engulfed in a very wet season, 72 inches of rain had fallen.

In Nevada City, almost 38 inches of rain have fallen in this precipitation year compared to a normal 54 inches for this date. The average annual precipitation for Nevada City is 57 inches, and 82 inches had fallen last year by this date.

Highs today will be around 60, with lows in the upper 30s to lower 40s. High temperatures will drop to the low 50s Wednesday and Thursday as the front moves through, with lows in the upper 30s.

Skies will be back to mostly clear Thursday night and become sunny Friday, but there is another chance for clouds and more showers next weekend. Highs for the weekend will be around 60, with lows around 40.
