Shirl Mendonca: Golf classic to benefit Roots and Wings

The Lake Wildwood Motorcycle Club promises a fabulous day on Sunday, Oct. 10, when they host the 20th Annual Golf Classic Tournament to benefit the Roots and Wings Educational Foundation.

The foundation is instrumental in providing funds to support our local Pleasant Valley Elementary School District through two annual events, the wine cruise on the lake in Lake Wildwood in August and the fall golf tournament.

Due to budget cutbacks by the state, fundraising for our schools is more important than ever, and the success of this tournament will directly impact Pleasant Valley and Williams Ranch schools, which support the growth and development of children within our own community.

In the last year, the foundation helped with special wood shop classes, outdoor science camp and new computers. This year, proceeds from the tournament will help to keep the libraries open at both schools.

When the future of this historic tournament was in question, the motorcycle club quickly stepped forward. Members were adamant the cause was too important. These are our Penn Valley and Lake Wildwood children, and the club wanted to help.

Members have been hard at work to make this event memorable. If you are lucky enough to get a hole-in-one on hole No. 11, you will walk away with a brand new 2010 Harley Davidson.

Events include prizes offering rounds of golf, golfing equipment and gift certificates. So come on out and test your skills – or luck, as the case may be. At the same time, you will be helping to keep the school libraries open.

Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Lake Wildwood Golf Course. The format is a four-person scramble, limited to 36 teams. The $115 per-person entry fee includes green fees, cart, refreshments, dinner, prizes and trophies.

Additional dinners for friends and family are $30 each, with a no-host bar starting at 5 p.m. and dinner and awards starting at 6 p.m.

If you have family or friends who want to share the day with you but are not golfers, they could volunteer to help out. It is always a fun way to be involved, and the committee will help you find something fun to do.

For information on entry forms, donations or volunteer opportunities, please contact event co-chair Tina Skrukrud at (530) 432-9319.
