Sheriff’s deputy finds his wife dead in home

A self-inflicted gunshot wound likely killed a woman at her Lake Wildwood home, according to the Nevada County sheriff.

Jill Weyand, a 39-year-old employee of Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, was reported dead Saturday by her husband, Mike Weyand, a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office for 12 years, Sheriff Keith Royal said.

“A preliminary investigation indicates the findings are consistent with suicide,” Royal said Monday.

He added investigators are still awaiting the results of toxicology and ballistics tests, and other findings before issuing a final report.

The shooting happened sometime after 11 p.m. Friday and was reported by the husband at 5:53 a.m. Saturday, Royal said. The husband reported he had been sleeping and didn’t hear a shot, according to the sheriff.

“He’s going through a lot,” Royal said. “It’s real traumatic.”

State Department of Justice investigators examined and recorded evidence at the house. While that doesn’t occur in all death investigations, the sheriff said it was done this time to avoid second-guessing because the husband is a deputy.

Jill Weyand was a 16-year hospital employee who worked as a radiation technician, hospital spokeswoman Brett Nelson said.
