Shelter overrun with kitties

Sammie’s Friends Animal Shelter has been overwhelmed with 141 cats and kittens since Sept. 1.

“In the eight-plus years I’ve worked at the shelter, I have never seen this many cats and kittens at the shelter at one time,” said shelter coordinator Ruth Rasmussen.

When the weather heats up, unaltered cats everywhere answer nature’s call to reproduce, and the next generation of cats begins. With an average of two to five kittens per litter, the numbers rapidly climb, and in a short time, the population increases exponentially.

“We need foster homes, are desperate for wet cat food and hoping for more adoptions,” employee Kristina Jones said. “Without the public’s help, we are in trouble.”

Sammie’s Friends is extending a two-for-one adoption special through the month of October. Cat and kitten adoptions are $50 and include spay/neuter, the first series of vaccines, deworming and a friend for life. The shelter is located at: 14647 McCourtney Road in Grass Valley. Adoptable animals can be viewed from 12-4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Adoptable animals can also be seen on http://www.petfinder.com/ shelters/CA1571.html or at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Sammies-Friends/97058408513 ?v=photos.

If you need assistance getting your own cats/kittens spayed or neutered, call the shelter at (530) 471-5041. Spaying and neutering now will help reduce the pet overpopulation later.
