Seminar on aging the smart way
Few people look forward to the year when they can no longer fit all of their birthday candles on a single cake or the day they pluck their first gray hairs.
Unfortunately, aging is inevitable.
At a free public seminar Monday, Dr. Irving Hellman and other regional experts will discuss how to make the senior years of life truly golden.
An elder care adviser for UC Davis, Hellman will tackle issues about aging including how to organize and prepare for the future so that seniors and their loved ones can live comfortably while meeting their financial, physical and mental needs.
Hellman will also provide helpful tips and information to family members or loved ones of elders for successfully managing or providing direct care, said organizer Jonelle JerramParker.
JerramParker is a senior victim advocate for the Elder Abuse Advocacy & Outreach Program of Nevada County, which is cosponsoring the event.
In an area that has a high proportion of senior citizens, JerramParker said, a number of local and distant family members of seniors call her office for information or help managing the care of their loved ones.
“This seminar will discuss how to survive the stresses of family care giving and how to prevent burnout from managing your own life and the life of an older family member or loved one,” she said.
After Hellman’s lecture, a panel of local experts – Barbara Larson of Del Oro Caregiver Resource Center, Renee Chevraux of Sierra Nevada Homecare, Victoria Johnson of the Alzheimer’s Response Team, private practice attorney Betsy Hart, and a representative from Adult Protective Services – will answer questions with specifics about issues in Nevada County, JerramParker said.
“This seminar will serve as a preventive measure by arming people with information so they can prepare successfully for something inevitable,” JerramParker said.
The event will be held from 7-9 p.m. at the Grass Valley Elks Lodge at 109 S. School St. and is free to the public.
