See film about 9/11 widows

Two women who were widowed in the Sept. 11 attacks are the subject of an award-winning documentary to be screened by Gather the Women of Nevada County next week.

The film, “Beyond Belief,” chronicles their lives as they cope with grief and struggle to raise their families as single mothers. They later dedicate themselves to empowering Afghan widows whose lives have been ravaged by decades of war, poverty and oppression – factors they consider to be the root causes of terrorism.

As they travel from their comfortable neighborhoods to desperate Afghan villages, they discover an unlikely kinship with widows halfway around the world.

The screening, set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, is the third film in the Gather the Women Film Series. It will take place at Unity in the Gold Country, 180 Cambridge Court, Grass Valley, off Whispering Pines Road.

After the screening, attendees will break up into small discussion groups.

Men are welcome. No child care is provided, and the subject matter is not appropriate for young children. Tickets are available at the BriarPatch Co-op for a suggested donation of $5. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
