Second theft in 2 days for food bank

The Food Bank of Nevada County, already reeling from a burglary that caused about $5,000 in damage to its Grass Valley facility, had its truck stolen Monday night.

“It’s so bizarre,” said Executive Director Toni Thompson. “When is it going to stop?”

The maroon pickup truck, equipped with a maroon camper shell, was purchased by the Food Bank so volunteers could make pick-ups and deliveries without having to pay for the gas a larger delivery truck would use, Thompson said.

“It’s a real necessity for us,” she said.

The truck was parked in front of the door of the Food Bank in the 300 block of Railroad Avenue.

“We left here at 4 p.m., and that’s the last time we saw it,” Thompson said Tuesday.

Burglars made off with food, a checkbook and gift certificates after breaking in to the building over the weekend, which was discovered Monday.

The burglars came through the front door with a crowbar, completely destroying the door and the frame, Thompson said.

The burglar also took gas from the organization’s trucks and pried open her office door.

“They left a note that said, ‘I do apologize, I am in a hard place,’” Thompson said Monday.
