Search of home turns up forgery materials

A search of a south Nevada County man’s home turned up phony checks and drivers’ licenses and equipment to make them, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

Rex A. Dawedeit’s home on Palomino Place, east of Brewer Road, was searched March 1, and the alleged findings were reported by the Sheriff’s Office Friday.

Dawedeit, 46, who has three other Nevada County cases pending, is being held at Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on $38,500 bail. He was arrested on suspicion of forgery of the California state seal, forging driver’s licenses and making fictitious checks.

The suspect’s computers are being examined by the High Tech Crime Task Force in Sacramento, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Dawedeit faces charges in three other cases, including two check-fraud cases in which he pleaded not guilty Wednesday.

One case accuses him of writing a check from a closed account to rent four adult movies from Express Video in Nevada City in December. The videos were recovered from Dawedeit’s home, according to Nevada City police.

Another complaint alleges he rented a Ford Escort last July from Thrifty Car Rental in Grass Valley with a credit card, and then closed the account and didn’t return the car.

Court records say Dawedeit has 1990 convictions for grand theft and second-degree burglary in Orange County, and 1994 convictions for forgery in Nevada and Sacramento counties.
