The search for a Grass Valley man wanted on several warrants, most recently on suspicion of attempted murder, continued Monday.

“The whole county really wants him,” Grass Valley Police Sgt. Brian Reno said.

Frank Vargas, 26, is accused of stabbing a man Saturday night in a Rough and Ready home. Vargas grabbed the man by the head and threatened to stab him in the throat, possibly in retaliation for an incident involving a Vargas family member, Nevada County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Jones. The man broke free, but Vargas stabbed him in the arm, Jones said.

Before the incident, Vargas was wanted on a $250,000 Nevada County warrant for assault with a deadly weapon.

Grass Valley police also want Vargas on suspicion of false imprisonment and criminal threats, Reno said. At least two other warrants accuse him of forgery and receiving stolen property.

Besides a goatee and shaved head, the back of his head bears a swastika tattoo. He might be wearing a wig to cover the tattoo, Reno said.

Vargas also might have a bullet wound in his lower left leg. On Aug. 8, 2001, Nevada City police found Vargas sitting alongside Gold Flat Road with blood running from his leg.

He told police he had been shot by a passing motorist while walking, but Chief Lou Trovato said the physical evidence didn’t support his claim.
