A Scotts Valley man was arrested Saturday night after police found him in a Kmart bathroom with stolen men’s clothing, methamphetamines, and a concealed knife.

According to Grass Valley Police Department Sgt. Joe Matteoni, Kmart officials called police around 9:30 p.m. Saturday to report a trespasser.

When officers arrived, they found Tristan Appleton hiding in the establishment’s bathroom.

Appleton, 39, initially lied to police officers about his identity, giving them a false name.

“It was reported by loss prevention officers at Kmart that he had been stealing merchandise,” said Matteoni.

Appleton was found with stolen men’s clothing and a baseball cap hidden in his pants and pockets. Police arrested Appleton after also finding a glass pipe, .12 grams of meth, and a concealed knife in his possession.

Sheriff documents state Appleton is a tree climber from Scotts Valley, and is charged with carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, shoplifting, false identification to a peace officer, and possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

He is currently in custody on a $16,000 bail.
