School district interviews 3 for superintendent post

Three candidates interviewed Saturday for the soon-to-be open position for leader of Grass Valley schools.

Candidates for superintendent of the Grass Valley School District were selected from a pool of 28 applicants.

“We had three excellent candidates interview,” said District Board President Rob Avery, who added he was pleased with the applicant pool. Candidates also interviewed with a group of 14 parents and teachers.

Avery declined to release the applicant’s names.

They area applying to replace Superintendent Jon Byerrum, who plans to retire after 21 years with the district – the last 16 in the top spot. He’ll leave the position at the end of the school year

The board intends to hire Byerrum’s replacement by June, Avery said. He provided no firm timeline to announce the replacement.

Byerrum’s successor will inherit a district reeling from state budget cuts and needing to chop about $750,000 from its $11.7 million budget for 2010-11.
