School consolidation committee misses quorum, reschedules

A meeting of a county committee that discusses school consolidation didn’t reach a quorum Wednesday morning.

The meeting has been rescheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20.

The County Committee on School District Organization meets annually and is supposed to have 11 members. Three attended Wednesday.

The committee, which is separate from the county board of education, is responsible for facilitating any reorganization of districts and for redrawing district boundaries after a census.

On the agenda:

• Superintendent of Schools Holly Hermansen was set to discuss a proposal from educational finance consulting firm School Services of California to study the financial impacts of potential consolidation.

The county did a similar, in-house impact study several years ago.

“I want to see if the committee thinks it’s appropriate to take it further,” Hermansen said.

• The committee was set to consider transferring its responsibilities to the county board of education. Statewide, 25 counties have a separate school district organization committee, while 32 counties use only the county board of education.
