A San Juan Ridge vegetation fire engulfed seven cars Monday, sending a large pillar of black smoke into the air, reported responding fire agencies.

The blaze was reported as a debris fire at approximately 2 p.m. near the intersection of Pleasant Valley Road and Birschville Road, according to Christoffer Montelius, spokesman for North San Juan Fire Department.

Along with NSJ fire, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection also responded Monday only to find the flames were reclassified as a wildland fire as the column of black smoke appeared, Montelius reported.

A full wildland response was initiated with additional engines from Cal Fire and Tahoe National Forest’s fire department. The fire was contained within an hour at a quarter of an acre. The black smoke was attributed to seven cars burning, Montelius reported.

“Our indication was that they were abandoned, dumped there,” Montelius said. “They were fully engulfed in flames. They all burned completely.”

The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation, Cal Fire representatives said Tuesday.
