Sale of fireworks should be halted

Considering the unusually dry year in Nevada County and the devastating South Tahoe fire raging over the hill, I feel that it is an absolute necessity that the city of Grass Valley put an immediate halt to the sale of fireworks for the Fourth of July holiday and ban the use of them in the city.

Many people do not realize the risk and, although already banned throughout the county, people shoot off fireworks outside the city limits. With the fire in Tahoe, we already are seeing a 49er Fire event, and it is only June.

I understand that many charitable and service groups rely on revenue from fireworks sales. Perhaps they can find some other nondestructive medium, such as candy or magazine sales, to raise money that won’t put the entire county in jeopardy.
