Rural chase ends in arrest

State park rangers held a 40-year-old Nevada City man at gunpoint Friday afternoon after he led them on a high-speed car chase through the San Juan Ridge area and then refused to get out of his car, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

Paul Warde Switzer was arrested Friday for allegedly making terrorist threats, assault and battery, evading arrest and resisting a peace officer, according to South Yuba State Parks Lt. Jeremy McReynolds.

State park rangers were pursuing Switzer in connection with an alleged assault and battery that took place at Purdon Crossing on Thursday, McReynolds said.

After rangers spotted Switzer, he led them up Purdon Road to Mother Trucker’s on Tyler Foote Crossing Road, where he locked himself in his car and refused to get out until “real” law enforcement officers arrived, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.

With their weapons drawn on Switzer, the rangers waited for the sheriff’s deputies to arrive, McReynolds said. When the deputies showed up, Switzer came out of his car and was taken into custody by the rangers.

Switzer was booked at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility. Law enforcement officials are still investigating the incident and additional charges may be filed, according to McReynolds.
