Ruby’s closes in Grass Valley

Rubys Fine Gifts in Grass Valley has closed its doors for good, the owners confirmed this week.

The business, which has been in Grass Valley for more than 25 years, was “unfortunately, a victim of the economic times,” said Guy Davis, who along with his wife, Dawn, acquired the business in September of 2004.

Rubys was located on Nevada City Highway in the Fowler Center shopping plaza. Today, the store is closed although inventory can be seen inside the building.

The original owners, Ruby Baumgart and her husband, William, had the business for 26 years. They moved it into the former Tuscany Gardens Restaurant, a 6,500-square-foot building with 60 parking spaces, in 2002. At the time, the store had 12 employees.

Davis said he owned a locksmith business in Roseville before they bought Rubys and returned to his wife’s hometown of Grass Valley.

Now, he said his wife has found a job while they figure out their next step in life.

“We really don’t know what we’re going to do,” Davis said.
