Rough and Ready fire: Blaze destroys two buildings

A fire destroyed two outbuildings in Rough and Ready on Saturday, ripping through the structures at the same time firefighters battled a Grass Valley blaze. The Rough and Ready fire started about 4 p.m. on Mushroom Trail, off Rex Reservoir Road. It burned through the two buildings, though the road’s only residents were uninjured, Rough and Ready Fire Chief Bob Vaughn said.

“Both buildings are on the ground. Nothing salvageable,” he added.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Vaughn said he spotted smoke from the Mushroom Trail fire after taking a firefighter to the Grass Valley blaze. Helicopters from that larger fire began fighting the Rough and Ready blaze, pouring water on the flames and halting its spread, Vaughn said.

One of the burned buildings stood two stories and held furniture and machinery, among other items. The other building, about four feet away, was smaller.

Cal Fire as well as the Penn Valley, Grass Valley and Nevada County Consolidated fire districts assisted Rough and Ready in fighting the fire.
