Resident turns lemons into, well, doughnuts

In an effort to cope with trauma in her own life, Nevada County resident Kathy Simpson collected and delivered dozens of doughnuts and other pastries Tuesday to hundreds of firefighters stationed at the fairgrounds.

Simpson’s son, 28, was at home recovering after he shot himself last week in a suicide attempt, she said.

Tuesday morning, the woman who has lived in the county for 30 years, visited to area bakeries and grocery stores, collecting donated treats to give to firefighters who have battled blazes on the Tahoe National Forest.

“I’ve had my share of tragedy. The best way I deal with it is to get my mind off it and help other people in need,” Simpson said. “People up here, when there is an emergency they just come together.”

When her SUV, decorated with American flags, was filled with Twinkies, bagels and doughnuts, she dropped off the goodies at the fire command center at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Firefighters from around the United States and Canada have arrived to fight the Yuba River Complex fires, which are nearing containment.

Local businesses that contributed baked goods include SPD Market, Summer Thyme Bakery, Daily Donut, Rainbow Market, Grocery Outlet and Bubba’s Bagels.
