Register to vote, get info by Monday

Monday is the last day to register to vote and receive general election information and an application for an absentee ballot, Nevada County Clerk-Recorder Lorraine Jewett-Burdick said Wednesday.

Voters must re-register every time they move or if they change their name, she said.

Voter registration cards are available throughout Nevada County, including government offices, post offices, libraries, chambers of commerce and many businesses.

Voters can help save tax dollars by returning sample ballot booklets mailed to the wrong person or the wrong address, Jewett-Burdick said this week.

Residents can mark the back page of the booklet with a note such as “Not At This Address” and place the booklet back in the mail. After the election, the post office will provide the county Elections Office with a list of addresses where ballot booklets were undeliverable or returned.

After each election, several hundred voters who have moved are deactivated based on information derived from the sample ballot booklet return program, Jewett-Burdick said. The program saves taxpayers thousands of dollars every year.

For more information, contact the Elections Office at 265-1298, or toll-free from Lake of the Pines and Truckee within Nevada County at 1-888-395-1298.
