Readers’ Corner: Sept. 24, 2010
Several readers have contacted The Union regarding the Treasure Hunters Roadshow, which has been buying vintage jewelry, gold and silver coins, and antiques at the Holbrooke Hotel this week.
The group, from Springfield, Ill., is at the hotel at 212 W. Main St., downtown Grass Valley, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Organizers have said they buy gold based on the day’s current gold value, but at least one reader said she was offered much lower prices on jewelry.
Thursday, the price for gold traded on the commodities exchange in New York was $1,200 an ounce; JH Mint owner Jason Hommel said he pays 5 percent under the daily value. Of course, the price for gold depends on the karat. You can find the previous day’s price in the pages of The Union Tuesday through Saturday, usually on the business page.
If you are not offered what you believe your item is worth, take it to another dealer for appraisal. John Engelhardt at Security Gold Exchange buys gold and silver to melt down; he suggested checking with Utopian Stone in downtown Nevada City on the value of jewelry.
Stucki’s in downtown Grass Valley also offers jewelry appraisals.
Rene and Mimi Vedrine asked that we help them say good-bye to the many friends they made in their 40 years in Nevada City. Here’s what Mimi wrote:
“Rene suffered a severe stroke in January. Thankfully, he was able to come home in May from rehabilitation. It has been a long journey, and we have decided that it’s best for the two of us to be closer to our son and daughter, Patrick and Valerie, and their families in the San Francisco Bay Area.
“We sold our home and purchased a one-story townhome in Livermore, close to Valerie and her husband Tony, and we look forward to the time we’ll share with them and their children.
“We will miss everyone very much and will always hold the wonderful memories of Nevada County close to our hearts. Thank you to our dearest friends – Linda and Bud Wood, Andree Alexander, Ken and Jeanne Hiebert, The Willo and the Nevada County Country Club for their continued support.”
Good luck, Rene and Mimi!
