A Rough and Ready brother and sister won first place in The Union’s 2010 Fall Home and Harvest Festival’s “Make Your Own Scarecrow Contest” last weekend at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Brandon Moen, 8, and Michelle Moen, 4, won a gift certificate from Awesome Jump Houses and Slides for a five-hour rental of a bounce house of their choice and use of a cotton candy machine for a party.

The Moens’ scarecrow was donated and sold to raise money for the Oct. 28 Paint the Town Pink breast cancer care event.

Joel Brockmyre, 51, owner of Nevada City’s J. Appleseed, has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, or cancer of the bone marrow. As a self-employed landscaper and permaculturist, Joel does not have health insurance, so friends are putting on fundraisers to help him out.

Here are the details:

• Enter a raffle to win a J. Appleseed raised bed, valued at $429. Tickets are $5 each, five for $22 or 10 for $40, and are available at Checks can be made payable to El Dorado Savings Bank, Joel Brockmyre Medical Fund, 1751 E. Main St., Grass Valley, CA 95945.

• From 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, the Organic Grill at California Organics will donate 20 percent of proceeds to Joel. California Organics is at 135 Argall Way in Nevada City’s Seven Hills Business District. Call (530) 265-9392.

• From 5 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, Matteo’s Public, 300 Commercial St., Nevada City, will donate 10 percent of all proceeds to Joel. The raffle winner will be announced that evening. Call Matteo’s Public at (530) 265-0782.

Owners Larry and Nancy Mello are donating 10 percent of proceeds from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, to United Way of Nevada County, which shares the goodness with the group’s 20 local nonprofit partner agencies.
