More than 400 people attended the “Side by Side” auction and concert benefiting Hospice of the Foothills at the beautiful River Highlands Ranch and Vineyards in Big Oak Valley, west of Grass Valley.

Perfect weather – pleasantly warm into the evening – complemented the sound of frogs and crickets and the delicious hors d’oeuvres (and later on a dessert buffet with chocolate fountain!) served by Chef Antonio Ayestaran.

Owners John and Jane (Rivar) Waskiewicz bought the 600-acre ranch in 1999, erected a massive barn-like events center and recently built a stone stage and grassy amphitheater.

Jane Rivar inaugurated the stage with a concert, singing inspirational, original compositions, including her opening piece written especially for the event, to the accompaniment of a five-piece band.

The event and auction raised thousands of dollars, supporting Hospice of the Foothills’ new Compassionate Care Home, Friends board President Diane Wilson said.

“It was very successful,” Wilson added. She hopes Friends can mount similar galas in the future.
