Readers’ Corner 3.22.07
New florist in Nevada City: Marian Rose called to tell me that Wayne Brown (no, not the Wayne Brown the jail is named after) has opened Nevada City Floral Boutique at 109 Argall Way. Marian has known Wayne for many years and she is happy for him to be starting this business. I don’t know a single person who doesn’t love receiving flowers! The number at the flower shop is 265-4030.
Readers’ Theater: Tim O’Connor is directing four short stories on Sunday at Miners Foundry in a readers’ theater format. If you don’t know Tim, you may recognize him from his days acting on “Peyton Place.” (Remember when that show seemed so risqué? Wow, how times have changed.) Anyway, Tim told me this show is “witty, satiric and fun.” The stories are written by T. C. Boyle, Grace Paley, Roberston Davies and Frank O’Connor. The stars are Gayle Bell, Dave Iorns, Marion Jeffries and Bruce Kelly. This would be a fun event for a group to attend. Doors open at 1:30 p.m., it starts at 2 p.m. and cost is $12. Go to lunch and see some lively entertainment.
Fundraiser for Center for the Arts: This is Sunday also, but only 200 tickets will be sold at $125 each to hear the official Glenn Miller Orchestra. They will be performing numbers like “Moonlight Serenade,” “Tuxedo Junction,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” and “The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B.” If you appreciate having this entertainment venue in Grass Valley, this is a chance to be entertained and support the center. You will receive complimentary cocktails, wine, beer and gourmet hors d’oeuvres. Period dress or evening attire are encouraged for this fun-filled event. Call the center at 274-8384 ext. 14.
Senior project Charity Fashion Show: This is coming up Friday night at the Don Baggett Theatre at Nevada Union High School at 7 p.m. It is being put on by Brooke Bandy and Czerina Afable. Although the event is free, donations benefit Kids Cope, a program put on by our local Cancer Center to help kids who have family members with cancer. The fashion show will feature clothes from local stores, including Fresh Image, Yuba Blue, La Te Da, Mountain Recreation, Wild Side, The HerbShop, Good Times and Scotch Broom. Questions? Call Brooke at 913-2231 or Czerina at 575-7986.
Court Appointed Special Advocates: I can’t think of a better volunteer opportunity than this: Helping Nevada County children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Twice a year volunteers are trained for these jobs through Child Advocates. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply. An orientation session is set for Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at 531 Uren St. in Nevada City. Call Suzanne at 265-9550 with questions.
