Re Other Voices – Reopening the Idaho-Maryland Mine

Mr. Palmer lists many “facts” concerning the reopening of the Idaho-Maryland mine. He notes that Emgold, its owner, is a public company and as such has only one goal – to make money.

Gosh, I thought that is why companies are formed, be they private, public and, yes, even nonprofit. If a nonprofit does not make money, it cannot support its charitable works. If a company is not formed to make money, what’s the point?

We all seem to forget that it was and is business that generates the wealth that makes us the nation we are. It was Calvin College who first said “The business of America is business.” And, many of us can remember when we said, “As GM goes, so goes the nation” – and it was true.

Mr. Palmer is very much mistaken in his implication that business will do whatever it takes to make a profit regardless of the consequences. They cannot afford this attitude – it is not good business. And furthermore, society will not let them. Had his attitude been prevalent 200 years ago, we would still be east of the Allegany Mountains.
