Rain not a sign that fall is near

The drops caught many in Nevada County by surprise. But the rain, which was predicted for Sunday, is expected to go away completely by this morning.

The county’s first rain since Nevada City was sprinkled with .15 of an inch between July 23 and 24 was not a sign that autumn is on the way, said Harry StockmanCQ, of the QwikcastCQ weather service. Temperatures should start warming up today and be up in the 80s by the end of the week.

“You might run into a thunderstorm or two,” Stockman said. “They are spotty.”

The fall weather was carried into the area by upper-level troughs that brought cold and unstable air from the north, Stockman said.

The result was rain in Nevada County and thunderstorms around Sacramento. The National Weather Service in Sacramento issued a thunderstorm warning Sunday afternoon to parts of Sacramento County, and said the storms were slowly moving eastward.

Precipitation levels were not available Sunday evening. Prior to late July, the last rainfall Grass Valley and Nevada City saw was on June 28, at about a quarter of an inch.

There were several vehicle crashes in western Nevada County caused by rain or slick roads, but none of them involved serious injuries, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire protection.

Some roads were also temporarily flooded when storm drains were clogged with leaves or other debris.
