Railroad museum

David Mirhadi

Train buffs are invited to celebrate the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Transportation Museum’s first anniversary Saturday.

In addition to new summer hours, the museum is unveiling a new steam locomotive, and museum volunteers will be offering guided museum tours, live music, a raffle, food and drink. Grass Valley author and historian David Allan Comstock will be signing copies of his book, “Exploring Nevada County.”

The museum includes steam locomotives and railroad cars used during the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad’s existence from 1875 until the railroad closed in 1942.

The railroad’s colorful mining past was celebrated in a locally produced play, “Never Come, Never Go,” in the 1960s.

The railroad linked the towns of Nevada City, Grass Valley and Chicago Park with the Central Pacific Railroad in Colfax.

The Railroad Museum is a division of the Nevada County Historical Society.
