QUIET HEROES: Diane Cross, 45, Nevada City

The group I volunteer for: South Yuba River Citizens League.

What I do for the group: Currently, I’m a river monitor. That involves water sampling and monitoring. I currently monitor the river at Purdon Crossing.

How I got involved: After I first moved here, my husband and I met people at the SYRCL booth at Victorian Christmas. I was very interested and drawn to the people involved.

Why I think this group’s work is important: I do it because watersheds in the west are the most crucial part of our natural surroundings.

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was when: The best thing has been the particular individuals that I have met. It’s the key to the connection I get with people.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: Learning more about the place where I live. Also thinking that in some small part that I might be able to restore the damaged habitat.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: I’m an art docent at Deer Creek School and have done it at Seven Hills in the past.

I’ve lived in Nevada County since: 1986.

I like living here because: It’s a beautiful place, and a community in which people are interested in where they live.

The most important job that faces us as a community is: Bringing a cohesive and united stewardship of the place that we live.

I think volunteerism is important because: There are so many things that need to be done that we’re not going to get paid for.

“Quiet Heroes” appears each Thursday. If you know of a volunteer who is a quiet hero, call The Union newsroom at 273-9561.
