QUIET HEROES: David Jones, 59, of Grass Valley

The group I volunteer for: Gold Country Kiwanis.

What I do for the group: I’m involved with the Friendship Club, a part of the Kiwanis group that helps at-risk girls. I put on fund raisers, we have camp sponsorships, and raise money at activities such as a racing/miniature golf tournament at 49er Fun Park.

How I got involved: When I joined the Gold Country Kiwanis.

Why I think this group’s work is important: We influence a lot of children’s lives when they are young.

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was when: The thing that gives me the most satisfaction is getting a letter from a girl at a camp that I’ve helped sponsor.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: I think I have it pretty good in Grass Valley, and I want others to enjoy it, too.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: I’m a member of the Grass Valley/Nevada County Chamber of Commerce.

I’ve lived in Nevada County since: 1972.

I like living here because: I’ve always lived in a small town. I’m a theater nut, and I get a lot of opportunities to see that here.

The most important job that faces us as a community is: I’m real concerned about the traffic – specifically when you’re visiting the post office as often as I do. The traffic there in that part of town is a real concern of mine.

I think volunteerism is important because: A large segment of this county would be ignored without volunteers, and we really can’t do that.

“Quiet Heroes” appears each Thursday. If you know of a volunteer who is a quiet hero, call The Union newsroom at 273-9561.
