QUIET HEROES: Corinne Nicholson, 87, Grass Valley

The group I volunteer for: Grass Valley/Nevada County Chamber of Commerce.

What I do for the group: I answer the phone, make maps, make relocation packages for future residents or visitors, give directions. I also keep track of all the phone callers and track all the visitors.

How I got involved: I’d only been in Grass Valley about five months, and this neighbor who volunteered for the chamber came to my door and said they were looking for volunteers, and I’ve been here ever since.

The rewards I get from this job are: Meeting people and the satisfaction of helping people.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: I volunteer for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and I helped work the polling places at Tuesday’s election.

The most interesting thing that happened to me on this volunteer job was when: Five years ago, when they were remodeling this place, they told me that I couldn’t volunteer here so I went to the St. Joseph’s Cultural Center. That wasn’t exactly my cup of tea so I begged the chamber folks to let me come and work one day a week. I really wanted to be there.

Why I think volunteering is important: Because there are so many nonprofits that need the help and can’t afford to hire enough people to cover their needs.

The most important issue facing Nevada County residents: It’s growing too fast. Highway 49 is just far too busy.

Why I like living here: I like the weather.

“Quiet Heroes” appears each Thursday. If you know of a volunteer who is a quiet hero, call The Union newsroom at 273-9561.
