QUIET HERO: Arthur N. Johnson, 79, Grass Valley

The group I volunteer for: Grass Valley Assembly of God

What I do for the group: volunteer maintenance, construction

How I got involved: When you’re in an organization like this, if you’ve got some talents, they’ll call on you.

Why I think this group’s work is important: The work is needed. I have the time and I have income to support myself.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: I’ve volunteered at Wolf Mountain Christian Camp, and I was a volunteer fireman and chief for the old Watt Park Volunteer Fire Department.

I’ve lived in Nevada County since: 1956.

I like living here because: The weather, really. There’s enough of four seasons here to make it interesting, but there’s nothing really severe.

The most important job that faces us as a community is: Several things – the building process has become a very time-consuming and expensive process. It should be easier. The youth, too. For the most part, there’s lots of good kids around. Every once in a while, there should be a little more respect from them.

I think volunteerism is important because: It helps a lot of people. I’d rather use my skills than lose them.

“Quiet Heroes” appears each Thursday. If you know of a volunteer who is a quiet hero, call The Union newsroom at 273-9561.
