Proposition 21 – Save State Parks

Proposition 21 is no ordinary proposition. It was put on the ballot through caring citizens who realize the Legislature cannot take care of our most precious assets – our state parks. We must do it ourselves, directly.

California’s 278 state parks are deteriorating and need about $1.3 billion in maintenance. We used to have the nation’s best park system.

When the governor threatened closure of the Empire Mine State Historic Park it brought an immediate and effective response from this community. We obviously treasure our parks and appreciate the fact that without Empire Mine about $10 million would not be circulating through our local economy.

Proposition 21 creates a special trust fund (separate from the general fund) available only for the maintenance of state parks (85 percent) and wildlife conservation (15 percent). This fund would be collected by DMV from a $18 vehicle fee on cars.

The fund would be subject to an independent audit by the state auditor and a Citizens Oversight Committee. This would free the general fund from the millions that should be allotted for their care. This money can then be devoted to our other vital needs, such as schools.

Save our state parks for the enjoyment in the future that our children deserve, and expect of us. Vote “Yes”!
