Promoting the general welfare

Thank you, Mr. Blickenstaff, for your definition of a liberal’s interpretation of what the inalienable rights are: “Our government has the responsibility of seeing that all people residing in this country are adequately cared for in every way including housing, food, health, education, employment and retirement.”

This perception that the government is responsible views citizens as dependent children.

The Constitution used powerfully precise wording laying the foundation for the most industrious, successful, generous nation ever.

It had five powerful verbs attached to five responsibilities that are worthy of understanding: “… establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty …”

The Constitution never intended to establish, insure, provide or secure general welfare. It only promotes it.

Good laws allow success for the workers, less success for the lazy and punishment for unjust or evil.

Liberals want to establish, insure and provide general welfare. Conservatives promote general welfare and realize that when the responsibility to provide for myself or my family falls on me, and not government, then I’d better get busy.

(The infirm, injured, widowed and orphans are completely different and should be assisted with safety nets — whole different letter.)
