Power House benefit slated

A fund-raiser to prevent foreclosure on the property where the Yuba Power House was built 104 years ago has been scheduled for March 17.

The goal is to raise $5,000, said John Olmsted, whose California Institute of Man owns the 80-acre property in Browns Valley in Yuba County, where the power house lies in ruins and a nearby two-story Victorian-style house needs restoration.

A total of $14,000 needs to be raised by March 21, Olmsted said, adding that he has already about $6,000 in pledges.

The state Historical Commission voted Feb. 1 to designate the property a California Point of Historical Interest, making the property eligible for state and federal grant monies. The Yuba Historical Society spearheaded the effort to obtain the designation.

The Yuba Historical Society has offered to pay $30,000 for 25 acres, Olmsted said. The California Institute of Man purchased the land for $86,000 in 1989, he said.

The institute has offered $60,000 for 10 to 15 acres where the historical buildings are located, Olmsted said.

The March 17 fund-raiser will be 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Center for the Arts, 314 W. Main St, in Grass Valley.

Olmsted will lead a free hike to the Yuba Power House from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, starting from the Park-and-Ride lot at the corner of Highway 20 and Pleasant Valley Road. For information on the hike, call 272-3823.
