‘Popular populist’ speaks tonight

National radio commentator, columnist, public speaker, and best-selling author Jim Hightower is speaking to Nevada County residents tonight from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Grass Valley Veterans Memorial Building, 255 S. Auburn St.

Hightower, billed as “America’s Most Popular Populist” and featured on Nevada City’s KVMR-FM, is appearing as a fund-raiser for the BriarPatch Community Fund.

The community fund uses interest generated from various fund-raisers each year to give to local nonprofits, said Joey Jordan, who helped organize the event.

In the past, this amount has been about $1,000 per year, but there is hope that this year the amount will be larger with more profitable fund-raisers, she said.

Hightower was the community fund’s first choice for a speaker, Jordan said.

“He was the agricultural commissioner in Texas for two terms and he is very interested in sustainable agriculture and keeping the food supply in the United States safe,” she said.

Doors open at 7:15 p.m. for early seating, and the $10 general admission tickets are available at the door.

There are also a limited number of tickets still available for the Hightower Reception. The two-hour reception starts at 5:30 p.m. and will feature live debate coverage and includes reserved event seating, beverages, hors d’oeuvres and the chance for a closer experience with Hightower.

The $100 Hightower Reception tickets must be purchased in advance and are available at BriarPatch Community Market in Grass Valley and Harmony Books in Nevada City.
