Poker run Saturday for Hetty’s Haven

Hetty’s Haven, a shelter for women fleeing domestic violence, has opened in western Nevada County, and Women of Worth is holding a poker run Saturday to raise $4,000 in support of the program.

The 72-mile ride starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, in the parking lot of The Union newspaper at 464 Sutton Way, in the Glenbrook Basin area of Grass Valley.

Cost is $20 per person, with extra poker hands costing $5. Registration includes a post-run barbecue, drinks and music at Memorial Park in Grass Valley.

Hetty’s Haven houses 15 woman and their children, and already is at full capacity.

It is operated by Women of Worth, “a community-supported, volunteer-staffed, nonprofit helping domestic violence victims rebuild their lives and make a fresh start with dignity, hope and safety,” founder Sandy Schmidt said. “WoW provides a safe haven, material needs and support in their emotional, physical and spiritual healing process.”
