Placer County working to ID body found in American River

Placer County Sheriff’s officials are working to identify a man whose body was found in the American River Saturday afternoon.

A Placer County Sheriff’s helicopter crew spotted what they thought looked like a body floating in the river near China Bar in Auburn, according to spokeswoman Dena Erwin.

The crew had to halt its search Saturday as nighttime approached, but members of the sheriff’s dive team recovered the body Sunday and it was transported to the Placer County morgue.

Placer County Sheriff’s coroner’s officials will perform and autopsy and dental-record comparison late today and the man’s identity should be released by Tuesday, pending notification of next of kin.
