Placer County to give $10M toward Waddle Ranch purchase

Placer County voted Tuesday to contribute $10 million to the purchase of Waddle Ranch, a 1,482-acre parcel of land in the Martis Valley.

The Truckee Donner Land Trust and the Trust for Public Land have an agreement to purchase the property for $23.5 million from the Pritzker family.

“This is the county’s largest contribution ever for the acquisition of open space – and it’s at our end of the county,” said Executive Director Perry Norris of the Truckee Donner Land Trust.

The county’s board of supervisors voted 4-0 to approve the funding. Supervisor Robert Weygandt was absent from the meeting.

Waddle Ranch, which is split by the Placer and Nevada county line, runs from the floor of the Martis Valley southeast toward Martis Peak. It includes a sizable lake, Dry Lake, and is important habitat for many animals, according to the Truckee Donner Land Trust.

The land trust is still gathering the remaining $2.5 million in private funding needed to complete the purchase by the Oct. 31 deadline set for the acquisition.
