Ryan Helfter, 13, the youngest boxer at Perry’s Athletic Training Center in Grass Valley, poses for a photo during class Thursday evening. “I get to get my anger out on the bags, and then when I spar somebody, I punch them as hard as I can, if I can,” says Helfter, who began taking classes with his sister, Jentrie, a year ago. “It seemed kind of fun,” says Helfter of his new passion. “It was the best thing ever for me – I felt like I was stronger, I could punch harder. I just got more into it.” The gym, which opened two years ago, is a full training facility, offering boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts classes to anyone looking to train and even enter competition if they desire.
