Pets, photos and … bills? What would you take?

On Thursday, as fire forced evacuations in Carson City, The Union asked area residents in downtown Grass Valley what they would take if they were forced to evacuate for a major fire.

Wulff had to evacuate her property during the 49er Fire in 1988.



1. Photo albums.

2. “Of course, the dog and the kid.”




3. Artwork

“I actually took my bills (during the fire), but that was a stupid thing to take – I wanted them to burn up.”

Elena Smyrnos, Grass Valley

1. Photographs. “They hold so many good memories of our family.”

2. Her grandmother’s ring, for its sentimental value.

3. Family.

“Being in city limits, I think there would be quite a bit of effort to make sure homes were not destroyed.”

1. Document such as birth certificates and Social Security cards. “I don’t want to go through the hassle of replacing them.”

2. Photographs. “To me they are priceless.”

3. A table her grandfather crafted 70 years ago.
