Pets find homes

The volunteers of the Nevada County Animal Shelter hosted their third Annual Adoptathon recently in conjunction with the North Shore’s Animal League’s international event, with close to 1,000 animal shelters participating all over the world.

Joining the Nevada County Animal Shelter was AnimalSave and Chow Chow Rescue of the Foothills.

Homes were found for six dogs and two cats from the shelter as well as one AnimalSave dog, formerly a shelter resident. In 2005, the event led to 18 adoptions. Proceeds from two raffles, a bake sale, T-shirt sales and miscellaneous donations totaled $2,180, approximately three times what the event raised during the 2005 Adoptathon.

All of the money raised goes to Sammie’s Friends, a nonprofit organization which pays for the medical expenses of the shelter animals. (The county pays $100 toward nonemergency medical care per animal. Sammie’s Friends helped hundreds of animals get healthy and, therefore, become adoptable.)

The Sierranaders, a local barbershop-harmony chorus, performed for about an hour during the event.
