Pet adoption center opens

Friends of Nevada County Animals Inc. has opened a new pet adoption center on Joerschke Drive in Grass Valley.

The in-town location should provide easy access for western county residents looking to adopt a pet while helping to reduce local euthanasia rates, the facility’s advocates say.

FONCA takes cats and dogs directly from the Grass Valley and Nevada County animal shelters. Over the last several years, FONCA has adopted or diverted 1,500 animals from the two public shelters.

Once in the FONCA program, animals are placed in quarantine for at least 10 days, tested for diseases, given vaccines, and then spayed and neutered.

The adoption center, which opened this month, is at 10147 Joerschke Drive, in the same building that houses Reed’s Locksmithing and Don’s Satellite TV.

Volunteers are needed to help staff the adoption center and to foster cats and dogs until permanent homes can be found. To learn more, visit fonca.nccn.net.

The site showcases animals available at the adoption center and includes a lost-and-found page where residents can report animals they have found or that are missing.

Adoption center hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The center offers used books for sale to offset costs, and welcomes donations of used books, clean towels, cat carriers and dog crates.

A time to drop off donations must be scheduled. Call the adoption center at 477-8700.
