Penn Valley Fire board fills 5th seat

Randy Casto has been appointed to the fifth seat on the Penn Valley Fire Protection District’s board of directors by Nevada County Supervisor Robin Sutherland.

Casto’s appointment last week is significant in that the board split 2-2 in December on whether to place a proposed tax measure on a ballot for voters. The measure, which would have raised taxes for fire protection and emergency services, was meant to staff the district’s new station in Penn Valley with full-time firefighters.

Sutherland’s appointment of Casto could break the 2-2 split on the tax issue and set the tone for the future direction of the district.

Casto served as a volunteer, pay-per-call firefighter and board member with the Gold Flat Fire Department from 1979 to 1991. He also served as the chairman of the board of the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District.

Currently, the Penn Valley Fire District staffs two to three firefighters at its Lake Wildwood station, but its new Penn Valley station depends solely on volunteers. The four positions that would be added if a ballot measure were approved by voters would allow two or three full-time firefighters to staff that station, according to district officials.
