Panel OKs animal shelter

A no-kill animal shelter on Rough and Ready Highway won approval from the Nevada County Planning Commission Thursday night.

Plans for the proposed 19,276-square-foot animal shelter, next to Grass Valley Veterinary Hospital, include a dog chalet, two phases of cat cabins, and areas for prospective pet owners to meet and bond with the animals.

The project architectural firm applied for a permit to build the single-story adoption center in two phases on the eight-plus acre parcel. The rolling, wooded site was donated by Michael and Judi Funk of Nevada City.

A campaign to build the center is under way, and more than $200,000 has already been raised.
