Paint the Town Pink tonight

Rachel Eakins’ Grass Valley floral studio took a Barbie-pink turn this week.

The lipgloss-colored gerber daisies, carnations, ginger and anthurium will grace the centerpieces and swags at tonight’s 4th annual Paint the Town Pink breast cancer awareness event, set for 5 p.m. at the Nevada County Fairgrounds main building.

“There’s a lot of good energy,” Eakins said of the fundraiser, which supports local breast cancer care. “There are lots of women and lots of wineries.”

Eakins moved from Carmel six years ago and started Art in Bloom, a variation on her Carmel florist shop, Blooms by the Sea.

She didn’t know a soul in town, but she drove through and fell in love with the natural beauty.

“It just took a leap of faith,” Eakins said.

Now she operates from the lower level of her 111-year-old Victorian home off Squirrel Creek Road. She describes her style as “innovative” and designs for weddings, special events and funerals.

Eakins will be giving clip-on orchids to guests at Paint the Town Pink, and auctioning off the centerpieces to help raise more for the cause.

Giveaways, food, live music and a fashion show will also be on hand tonight. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $35.

Paint the Town Pink is co-sponsored by The Union and Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.
