Oregon Creek a good place to beat the heat

Maddy Kerner takes a rope swing ride into the waters of the Middle Fork of the Yuba River at the Oregon Creek Day Use Area on the Nevada and Yuba County border Friday afternoon. Kerner spent the day with her family beating the heat at the popular swimming hole.

Summer swimming hole seekers who may not want to join the masses at the popular South Yuba River access at the Highway 49 bridge may rather want to continue up the road to the Oregon Creek Day Use Area.

Situated at the confluence of Oregon Creek and the Middle Fork of the Yuba River is a large swimming hole with a mixture of shallow and deep water. The gentle flow of the waterway makes this location popular with families with younger children.

Area youths, such as Maddy Kerner and Daniel Costantino, could be seen taking turns swinging from one of the swimming hole’s rope swings, while others used floatation devices to relax the day away on the water.

Observed high temperatures in western Nevada County varied between 91 to 95 degrees Friday.

Grass Valley highs are expected to be around 90 degrees today, 88 Sunday and will remain in the low 90s throughout next week.

Thunderstorm warnings remain in place today and Sunday in elevations above 5,000 to 6,000 feet over the weekend and into Monday.
