Opinions varied on tax hike plan

Some don’t want the new taxes proposed to shore up the state budget gap, while others say they are needed.

“I think they tax people in this state way too much,” said Georgenna Theos, of Penn Valley. “It’s one of the most expensive states to live in.”

Theos is a smoker and proposed taxes would hit her twice – through a 1 cent sales tax increase, and by upping taxes on a pack of cigarettes by $1.10. Taxes are also proposed for the highest-income taxpayers.

Theos, who works as a part-time bus driver, said the extra taxes would leave her unable to purchase things beyond basic items.

Sherry Chapman, of Grass Valley, said taxes are necessary to stabilize the state’s nearly $35 billion budget crisis.

“I think people need to pay a little more so we can have stability,” said Chapman.

Chapman was especially in favor of upping the cigarette tax.

“I especially like the idea of raising cigarettes $1.10, I think that’s a real good idea,” said Chapman.

But smokers were fired up against the tax.

“If they do that for cigarettes there’s going to be a lot meaner people who don’t get their cigarettes,” said Sheila Fairholt, of Grass Valley.

As a single mom with a six-month-old son, Christine Smith, of Grass Valley felt the taxes would take too big a chunk.

Even a dual income family might feel the pinch.

Lisa Nin, of Grass Valley, said if she really needed something, she would buy it, but the family would probably cut back on big-ticket items if the sales tax was increased. Nin and her husband both work, and they have a three- year-old daughter.
