A Grass Valley woman was injured Wednesday when her car rolled down an embankment on the Golden Center Freeway in the Glenbrook Basin.

Karen Angove, 53, was traveling southbound toward Grass Valley around 3:25 p.m. when she veered off the freeway south of Brunswick Road, drove down the embankment, and landed in a stand of cattails some 20 feet below the roadway, witnesses say.

The vehicle traveled about 200 feet before stopping on its left side.

Angove, who was alone in the car, was transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. She was still being evaluated at the emergency room at 7 p.m., a supervising nurse said.

Angove was driving slowly, witnesses said.

“It just looked like she was pulling off,” said Scott Pickering of Grass Valley, who was driving behind her and stopped to help.

Michelle Forbes, a nursing assistant on her way home from work, also pulled over to help.

Angove told Forbes she was returning from a doctor’s appointment.

Angove was shaken up but did not seem in pain, said Forbes, who tried to console her as paramedics and firefighters carried her to the ambulance.

“But you never know,” Forbes continued. “She was in an awkward position.”

California Highway Patrol Officer Rod Rocha said the accident is under investigation.
