On Tonight: Smallpox episode on tonight’s "ER" season finale

“ER” the popular Thursday night hospital operations program on NBC will air a program on a dramatized possible outbreak of smallpox in Chicago. The show may raise the anxiety levels of viewers nationwide. The Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov) has posted information regarding smallpox in expectation that there will be many requests for information.

Nevada County OES has downloaded these CDC’s Interim Response Plan to a Smallpox event and placed in the Web site (www.mynevadacounty.com).

Since the program will initially air three hours ahead of the western time zone, the cdc website may be overloaded. Should your family, friends, neighbors or customers express concern, they can go to the county Web site or to the cdc Web site.

There is no cause for alarm. This is a proactive effort to get information in place for those who desire it. The program will be useful in that it will graphically describe what smallpox looks like since most Americans have not seen the symptoms of smallpox. Smallpox was declared eradicated from the world population in 1977.
