NU speech champ heads to Reno for Rotary district finals

Nevada Union High School’s Katie Bielen is headed to Reno for a chance to win $1,000 in a Rotary Club speech contest.

The NU senior bested four other students Wednesday in Rotary’s District 5190 Area 4 speech competition to earn the trip to the district finals. The high school competition was held at the Nevada City Elks Club on Wednesday and attended by about 100

Rotarians from the area’s five clubs: Grass Valley, Nevada City, 49er Breakfast Club, Nevada County South and Penn Valley.

Bielen placed first in a field that included fellow NU senior Kendal Butterfield, junior Shelby McClelland, Bear River junior Hayley Bigelow and Ananda Living Wisdom School sophomore Keshava Betts.

The win advances Bielen to the finals on May 22 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno. There, she’ll compete against other Northern Nevada and Northern California students for a $1,000 grand prize, a $750 second prize and $500 third prize.
