The second annual Safeway Parking Lot Sale and Barbecue to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in – obviously – the Safeway parking lot at 105 Neil Street, Grass Valley. The Susan G. Komen Foundation is a breast cancer research organization. Call Safeway at 273-0115 to reserve your spot for $10. Ask for Robert or Barbara.

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors presented a Certificate of Recognition to the local chapter of the Red Cross at last week’s supervisors’ meeting in acknowledgment of the ways in which the Red Cross has provided services. For more information on training programs or volunteer opportunities, call 272-3265.

The “Success By 6” national initiative is a call to action by United Way and communities to undertake deliberate, coordinated efforts to improve the lives of children from birth to age 6 so that all children enter school socially, physically, and cognitively ready to learn. The Neighborhood Center of the Arts has now officially closed its Fowler Center store (Full Circle Art) and will operate out of the NCA Center Gallery in the Litton Building at 200 Litton Drive, Suite 212, Grass Valley. The search has begun for new retail gallery space. NCA is looking for a donation of a van and a small pickup truck. Donations are tax deductible. A few weeks ago we told you that the Boy Scouts of America Troop 4 is recycling ink jet cartridges. The troop is now proud to announce that it is also able to recycle used laser jet cartridges. Used cartridges may be dropped off at convenient collection kiosks in the main lobby of the Rood Center, 950 Maidu Ave. in Nevada City, left boxed on the porch of the Grass Valley Scout Lodge at 415 Memorial Lane in Grass Valley, or in some cases, will be picked up by Troop 4 volunteers.
